LASER EYE SURGERY

Short sightedness and long sightedness are eye disorders that can be corrected using laser surgery. It can also be referred to as laser refractive surgery. The surgery is done to change the shape of the cornea using a type of laser known as excimer laser. This procedure is meant to restore good eyesight without necessarily having to use eyeglasses although there are people who need them even after the surgery.

There is a criteria that is followed before undergoing this. The person must be above the attained the recommended age (some countries require they be above 20 years or 21 years). Their prescription needs not to have changed for two years. The surgery needs to be done by an ophthalmologist that is registered by a relevant regulatory board. The prospective patient’s medical history should also be considered to ensure that proper guidance is given.

The types of laser surgery are:

LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis), PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy), LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis) and Wavefront-guided LASIK.

The laser surgery involves cutting across the cornea and correcting the tissues beneath it before placing the cornea back in place. It is done under local anesthetic and it takes a very short time to perform. The whole procedure is well programmed using computer technology to eliminate chances of errors occurring.

Chances for complications occurring are very minimal. There are those that come up like dry eyes, thinning of the eye wall and glare effects especially at night. This is experienced for sometime after the surgery after which they diminish after some time.

This surgery is not considered necessary and it might not get funding from health insurance. Many people consider this option because they don’t want to wear eye glasses or lens and they consider them to be cumbersome. Laser eye surgery is fine as long as one is well informed about it.
